Need some motivation – or perhaps just an excuse – to book your next vacation? Do it for your health! Traveling isn’t just a fun way to spend your free time as you age, but also proven to benefit mental and physical health for older adults.

Whether you’re exploring new cultures, lounging on a beach, or embarking on an epic bucket-list adventure, travel offers a wealth of benefits for seniors. Here are three major reasons why you should hit the road:

It does a body good

It’s no secret that physical activity is critical for good health, and exploring a new destination offers many opportunities for seniors get their blood pumping. Whether it is from getting in steps through sightseeing or swimming in the hotel pool, activity from traveling can increase mobility, strength, and even heart function. In fact, travel is scientifically shown to affect heart health, with studies indicating men and women who vacation more often are less likely to die from heart disease.

Science aside, older adults say they just feel better when they travel – before, during and after their trips. According to a 2018 AARP survey of seniors, 81 percent said they noticed improved health and well-being while on vacation and 73 percent reported experiencing at least one health benefit after they returned.

It keeps the mind sharp

Want to ward off cognitive decline as you age? Experts agree stimulating your brain is key. Visiting new places can keep the mind alert and attentive, building neuroplasticity. From learning new cultures and languages, visiting museums and historical sites, your mind gets to work in new ways, improving memory, concentration and function. “Travel is good medicine because it challenges the brain with new and different experiences and environments, says Dr. Paul Nussbaum, Ph.D., president and founder of the Brain Health Center, Inc. “It is an important behavior that promotes brain health and builds brain resilience across the lifespan.“

It provides social connection

Maintaining or initiating social participation in later life has been shown to have positive benefits on the mental health of older adults. And what better way to meet new people than by traveling together? Sharing travel experiences can help create connections and bonds with others you may not otherwise make. It also allows you to be surrounded with like-minded people. Get to know those who share the same goals, and mindset as you. Dive even deeper and learn what makes them different. Maybe it’s a new culture, different background, or unheard-of traditions that give you a brand-new understanding of someone. There is always more you can learn.

Don’t have a travel buddy? Many tour companies, ours included, offer single-occupancy options so you can meet other solo travelers along the way. You’re never too old to make new friends!

Ready to pack your bags? Take a look at our tour list and book your next adventure. Your body, mind and new travel friends will thank you for it!

Spring will be here before we know it and now is the time to start thinking about booking your next travel adventure! With a world out there to explore, traveling is a great way to maintain a happy, healthy, and active lifestyle this year. Check out some reasons below on why you should travel more in 2023.

1. Relax and Unwind

Between the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we often forget to slow down and enjoy ourselves. Traveling is a great way to prevent burnout so taking a couple days to reset and relax throughout the year can keep your energy and spirits high. It also allows you to de-stress and disconnect. Recharge your own battery and worry less about your phone and laptop!

2. Meet New People

Meeting people and making friends can become harder as we age. Traveling is a great way to connect with others you would not have gotten the chance to meet otherwise. Whether you mingle with the locals or bond with others on a group trip, there are so many chances to meet friendly faces.

3. Learn Something New

You are never too old to learn something new! Traveling allows us to experience new cultures, hobbies, food, history, and more. Take a trip to the Amish Country to step back in time and explore their way of living. Travel to New York City to immerse yourself in music and the Broadway shows. Visit our capital of Washington D.C. to brush up on your American history. All these destinations, and more, are offered on our motorcoach group tours!

4. Celebrate a Milestone

According to our travel insurance provider, Roam Right, 2023 is seeing an uptick in celebratory travel. “Travelers [are] going to great lengths and making significant investments to curate once-in-a-lifetime experiences. One of the great motivators for travelers booking in 2023 has been celebratory travel, especially since so many people missed commemorating key milestones together over the past few years,” stated the article in Travel Market Report. This year is the perfect time to take that milestone trip you have been putting off.

5. Create Lifelong Memories

You only live once, right! Living a life full of adventure and opportunity allows you to make memories and stories you can share with your loved ones. Whether you prefer to see a new landmark, put your feet in the sand, or enjoy the excitement of a city – there is a trip calling your name and Jefferson is ready to help you check off your bucket list! We can’t wait to travel with you this year! Our first trip heads out this April as we embark on our Pennsylvania Amish & Gettysburg tour (April 10 – 15). See our full list of 2023 tours here.

Jefferson Tours and Charters Names New Operations Manager, Michael Cregan

Company promotes former Operations Manager, Steve Cisco, to Corporate Sales Manager

LOUISVILLE, KY – Jefferson Tours and Charters and its parent company, Taylor Motors, have announced the hiring of a new Operations Manager in Michael (Mike) Cregan. The company, which has been operating in Kentucky since 1957, and in Louisville since 2015, has also promoted former Operations Manager, Steve Cisco, to Corporate Sales Manager.

Cregan Joins the company after serving as Assistant General Manager of Parking Operations at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Cregan moved to Louisville in 2015 to open Taxi 7 which filled a need for the community regarding taxi transportation by providing 100 brand new taxi cabs. He was the General Manager and helped Taxi 7 grow until it eventually merged with zTrip in 2019. Cregan stayed on and assisted with the merger of the companies. Prior to his time with Taxi 7 he was General Manager for Parking Operations at the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport where he managed 16,000 parking spaces and collected revenues for the airport in excess of $40 million annually.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Jefferson team which is comprised of the area’s leading experts in transportation services,” said Cregan. “I look forward to bringing my experience to the company while also learning from and growing with the team as well.”

Cregan was recruited by Pro Player Stadium in 1997 to manage what was, at the time, the largest surface lot operation in the state of Florida with over 20,000 spaces. Cregan managed more than 100 major events a year which included 81 Florida Marlins games, 10 Miami Dolphin games, and several College Bowl games. Cregan also worked with Miami Dade police and NFL & MLB transportation officials to devise traffic and parking plans for two World Series, a Super Bowl, two National Championships, and many concerts.

Cregan got his start in the Transportation field working 11 years for the Walt Disney Company in Orlando Florida mostly in transportation and special events. He has managed thousands of cast members and vehicle fleets and ran the Parking Operation at the Magic Kingdom and was an integral part of the opening of the Walt Disney World Indy 200.

“We are thrilled to have Mike joining our team here in Louisville,” said Greg DeLancey, General Manager for Jefferson Tours and Charters. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in both transportation and managing large organizations. He is going to be an incredible asset to the team.”

While Cregan will take over as Operations Manager, Steve Cisco, who was most recently serving in that role, has been promoted to Corporate Sales Manager. Since starting with the company more than 20 years ago, Cisco has become a transportation expert – leading operations, training drivers, and developing the company’s footprint as one of the most outstanding motorcoach companies in America. Cisco started at Taylor Motors as a school bus driver and was quickly promoted to Scheduler and Dispatcher at the Fort Knox Motor Pool. In 2004, Cisco became the Contract Manager for Taylor Motors School Bus Transportation at Fort Knox and then in 2014 he was promoted to Regional Director of Operations overseeing school bus contracts at military bases across the country. His duties led him to a top management position at Jefferson Tours and Charters in 2015, when the company added a school bus operation and later added motorcoach transportation after purchasing Shockey Tours.

“I am very excited with this new challenge. I feel so blessed to be working for such a great company and fantastic people. Truly, Taylor Motors and Jefferson Tours and Charters are industry leaders, and I am honored to play a role in that,” said Cisco.

Steve’s more recent accomplishments include coordinating transportation for over 100,000 attendees during the Kentucky Derby week of events at Churchill Downs.

“We know Steve will do an outstanding job and are excited to see him bring his unmatched expertise to this new role,” said Peggy Taylor, President of Taylor Motors. “We are also happy that Mr. Cregan has joined us to further develop the excellent foundation set over the years by Steve. The company’s growth in Jefferson County has been outstanding.”

While Cisco will maintain an office at Jefferson Tours and Charters in Louisville, he will take on the responsibility of developing bus transportation services for the company as a whole. Cregan will also work out of the company’s location in Louisville.

Packing for a trip abroad can be stressful! It’s hard to know what to bring, how much of it to bring, and what to leave behind. Here are 5 tips for packing for a weeklong trip abroad:

1. Be prepared but don’t overpack!
It’s easy to feel like you need to bring every article of clothing you own when you are preparing for a long tip with many activities. But there are some ways to cut down on your clothing options. Don’t bring a different outfit for each day, you can re-wear items, especially pants and jeans. Pick out 3-4 basic pairs of pants that go with anything and 5-6 different tops that will match them. Planning, and even trying on outfits based on weather predictions and itinerary can help reduce the amount you bring. It is also important to pack layers so that you can be prepared for all weather conditions. Lastly, make sure to pack a pair of comfortable shoes!

2. Bring minimal accessories
When traveling, it is important to conserve as much luggage space as possible. It is not necessary to bring an excessive number of toiletries. Many hotels provide shampoo, conditioner, soap, hairdryers, and more. Make sure to check before you pack so you can leave behind the complimentary items they provide. For the toiletries that you do need to pack, use travel size containers to save space. Finally, don’t bring your most expensive jewelry or handbags. You want to pack as light as possible, and as smart as possible!

3. Bring essentials in your carry-on
It doesn’t happen often but in the case that the airline misplaces your checked bag, it’s good to have the basic essentials in your carry-on. It’s wise to pack a toothbrush/toothpaste, undergarments, medicines, and a change of clothes to hold you over until your bag is located.

4. Things to never travel without
One thing you should never travel without are your travel documents. It may be helpful to make a folder containing all your travel documents including passport and tickets or itineraries for excursions – and always keep that folder with you. You also won’t want to forget is your chargers. It is important to make sure that you have chargers compatible with the electrical outlets of where you will be traveling. And, lastly, make sure to have a safe way to carry your money. It may be smart to invest in a money belt, belt bag, or secure wallet that you can always keep on you.

5. Leave room for souvenirs!
Airlines have weight restrictions on luggage, so be mindful that you do not go over the limit on your return. Save room for those fun souvenirs that you want to bring home!

Traveling abroad is fun and exciting, so don’t let the packing stress you out. Use these tips for packing and you will be ready to travel every weekend!

Wherever you’d like to go – let us be the ones to take you there.

We recently conducted another customer survey which gave us some insightful and encouraging results. Thank you to the nearly 300 of you who participated in that survey. When asked if you would be willing to travel by motorcoach, 61% of our passengers said yes!

What an amazing year we have had. These are words you may not be seeing or hearing much these days. But the truth is, even with the unprecedented challenges presented to us, we at Jefferson Tours and Charters did have an amazing year.

How? Because of everything we learned, including that;

Our team is resilient. This year, in the face of unmeasurable odds, we learned that our team is more resilient than ever. When we first heard that we would have to shut down our tours and charter business, we truly did not know what we would do. Instead of giving up – we got creative. Innovating in a time when many businesses were losing faith. We found new revenue streams, heightened our already state-of-the-art sanitation procedures, and focused on re-branding ourselves to Jefferson Tours and Charters.

Our passengers are loyal. Even when you could not ride with us, you kept us in your hearts. That was obvious with how often you reached out and how quickly you have been ready to get back on the road with us – whenever you feel comfortable to do so. We recently took a customer survey that found that the majority of our passengers would feel comfortable traveling in the next year, especially now that a vaccine is available.

Our tours are better than ever. Not only have we innovated in challenging times – so have our travel partners. We are more excited than ever to bring you updated and modern tour programs in 2021 including local, regional, and even international destinations. The following are 3 fall must-do’s in-and-around Louisville.

Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular:  The Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is a signature Louisville event and is one that you’ll be talking about for years to come. This year, the event will take place entirely as a drive-through but will still offer attendees the chance to see 5000 glowing carved pumpkins in all shapes and sizes. Your favorite pop artists, sports icons, storybook characters, movie heroes, and other works of art will come to life in these pumpkin masterpieces. This is truly once in a lifetime experience. Jefferson Tours and Charters is now offering group packages to the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular that include admission and travel to and from the event.

Huber’s Orchard and Farm: Located in Starlight, Indiana just 30 minutes from Louisville, this destination is a fall staple for local families. Traveling and seeing the world around us is still very much a part of our culture, our society, and our everyday lives – even as we navigate our “new normal.” Humans yearn to explore the world around them, and with some accommodations and increased attention to safety, we can still do so even in uncertain times.

The truth is, you don’t need to travel to a big city to get a “big city” experience. The following are three mid-size cities, all within a drivable distance from Louisville, that have been named some of the fastest growing cities in the United States. So, if you’re wary of traveling to larger cities like New York, Chicago, or Atlanta – these are some great options that won’t mean sacrificing all the best parts of a big city life.

Murfreesboro, Tennessee: In 2020 the United States Census listed Murfreesboro as one of the fastest growing cities in the country. This Volunteer State gem is just 4 hours from Louisville and is brimming with nightlife, amazing restaurants, and fun attractions. A college town, the city is also “full of green spaces, parks, and hiking trails.” Something for everyone.

Raleigh, North Carolina: Known as the City of Oaks, for its many oak trees, Raleigh is just a day’s drive from Louisville. Forbes recently named this North Carolina city one of the fastest growing in nation. Raleigh is known for its amazing BBQ restaurants and plentiful outdoor activities. We recommend checking out the various art, science, and history museums which are all currently open.

Columbus, OH: According to IdeaStream, Columbus is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation by population, and is the only fastest growing city in the Midwest. Just three hours from Louisville, Columbus is well-known for its shopping, historic sites, and breweries. Looking for something to do with kids? Be sure to check out Legoland Discovery Center which is currently open to the public.

Want to travel in style? Book a motorcoach or shuttle with Jefferson Tours and Charters to take you and your group to any of these cities or similar regional travel destinations. We will get you there safely and with taking the upmost attention to sanitation procedures.

Happy Traveling!

When most people think of ground travel, they do not immediately think “earth-friendly.” But the truth is, motorcoach travel is one of the most ecological modes of transportation that exists.

According to a recent study by the American Busing Association Foundation (ABA), motorcoaches are the greenest way to travel.

The study, which evaluated the environmental impacts of different modes of transportation, found that every motorcoach “has the potential to displace 55 less-efficient cars.” It also found that motorcoaches are “seven times more efficient than travel by car.” A family that chooses motorcoach travel over even a hybrid car will cut their carbon emissions nearly in half.

The study also found that “one gallon of fuel can provide more than 200 passenger miles on a motorcoach” making it even more efficient than travel by train or plane.

If you’re looking to travel in the most ecologically efficient way – motorcoach travel is your answer.

Think of traveling by motorcoach like traveling in a large carpool. By reducing the number of cars on the roads you can reduce each individual’s carbon footprint.

Jefferson Tours and Charters offers a variety of group travel options from smaller luxury shuttles, to large corporate motorcoaches, to school buses. Check out our fleet to see our vehicles and get an idea of what would best suite your needs.

Of course, at time when public health is at the forefront of everyone’s minds, sanitation and safety continue to be priority number one. Read all of our sanitation procedures here.

According to a recent customer survey, Jefferson Tours and Charters learned that majority of our customers are looking to safely travel within the next year on short/weekend regional trips.

With motorcoach travel, you don’t have to pick and choose. You can travel in the most ecological way without sacrificing safety.

As we forge ahead in challenging times, it’s clear that there is much uncertainty around what our “new normal” will look like.

To get a better idea of our passengers’ sentiments around traveling, we recently sent out a customer survey that received over 260 responses. Thank you to all those who participated. The following are our findings.

Overall the majority of respondents said they would feel comfortable traveling soon – with 55% saying they’d feel comfortable doing so in the next year.

Regarding type of travel, 58% of respondents said they would be interested in regional travel destinations. Additionally:

  • 46% said they would be interested in day trips
  • 43% said they would be interested in weekend trips
  • 50% said they would be interested in visiting destinations within a drivable distance

Only 19% of respondents said they would be interested in air travel and only 6% said they would be interested in international travel destinations (note that respondents were asked to choose all that apply).

Lastly, 82% of respondents said if they were to travel it would likely be for fun or a vacation rather than for business.

This data tells us several things. It tells us that while there are certainly still mixed feelings around traveling, most of our passengers are optimistic that they will feel comfortable taking a short weekend vacation or day trip in the next year. We also know that air travel and international destinations may be off the radar for folks for some time.

That’s good news for Louisville. According to Louisville Tourism Director of Marketing Michael Fetter Louisville is within “a day’s drive from 60% of the population” which also means major landmarks and attractions as well.

Jefferson Tours and Charters offers a safe way to travel to regional destinations. Book one of our existing tours or charter one of our state-of-the-art motorcoaches for your next regional trip!

Traveling safe.

Bus travelers these days are more focused than ever on the cleanliness and sanitation of the bus between rides.  As one customer asked, “How do I know the bus has been disinfected?”

It’s a great question and one we are excited to answer.

There are several terms you may hear from bus companies, including “we clean our buses thoroughly,” or “we wipe down our buses from front-to-back with an approved cleaning solution to sanitize them.”

But given the recent pandemic, there are new methods and higher standards to adhere to.  Great bus companies are making a major effort to not just clean but “disinfect” bus compartments. Electrostatic sprayers, such as those used by Jefferson Tours and Charters, are now considered best practices.

“It’s part of our Quality Control Plan,” said Greg DeLancey, General Manager of Jefferson Tours and Charters.  “It’s really a game-changer.  While wiping down handrails and other high-touch surfaces is important, electrostatic sprayers allow us to disinfect all areas of the bus.”

DeLancey added that, “By positively charging droplets of liquid, these sprayers naturally seek out surfaces to adhere to. The positive charge makes the droplet electrically stronger than the surface or the item you are treating. Just like magnets, they are drawn to each other and attach when one surface is more positively charged than the other. In simple terms, when you spray a solution that is charged with electrostatics, the solution will surround the object – and disinfect it thoroughly.”

The EPA and CDC approved solution allows for additional assurance that the product is safe for everyone. This short video clip shows exactly how our buses are disinfected.  The product not only can kill Coronavirus, but kills mold and mildew, eliminates allergens and odor, and disinfects air ducts.

Passengers are always looking for confidence when they travel.  Now, with these electrostatic sprayers, Jefferson Tours and Charters can present a bus that has been disinfected.

“The fog produced by these Star Wars-like sprayers gets deep into fabric and clings to surfaces to destroy or inactivate viruses or bacteria to a large degree,” said DeLancey. “A few minutes after the microdroplets are sprayed throughout the bus, they evaporate, and the bus if off on its next adventure!”

Survey Says: Travelers are ready!

There’s a lot going on the world right now, but we know that better days are on the horizon. As a travel company, we continue to be keenly focused providing the safest, cleanest, and friendliest experience for our passengers.

We have taken this time to increase our already-stringent sanitation procedures. This includes adding a fog-sanitizer and prepping our entire team on how to navigate the “new normal” as we accommodate passengers of all kinds on our trips going forward. Check out our extensive sanitation procedures here

According to a new study, travelers are ready to hit the road again. Leisure travel spending and searches are on the rise. Likewise, a survey by TheVacationer.com found that nearly 58% of travelers said they’d feel comfortable traveling in the next 6 months.

However, of those travelers, a fewer percentage said they would feel comfortable traveling internationally.

Motorcoach travel is a great option for those seeking an adventure in a clean and safe environment that they can trust. At Jefferson Tours and Charters, safety has always been our top priority.

We are taking reservations now and booking tours for August 2020 and beyond. Check out our tours here.
