Day 1 – Hagerstown, Maryland – We travel through West Virginia into the “Old Line” State of Maryland, where we overnight in Hagerstown.
Day 2 – West Haven, Connecticut – After an included breakfast, we continue through the “Empire State” of New York, continuing to our hotel in West Haven.
Day 3 – Mystic Seaport Museum – Newport, Rhode Island – After an included breakfast, we visit Mystic Seaport Museum, our nation’s largest maritime museum. In this recreated seaport village, we will be able to walk through actual homes in which seafaring New Englanders once lived 200 years ago. Be sure to visit the Charles W. Morgan, the only surviving wooden whaling ship in the world. Later, we will drive through legendary Newport, Rhode Island, the “City by the Sea,” whose historic mansions best illustrate the Gilded Age. America’s wealthiest families built their summer homes here in the yachting capital of world during the late 19th century before income tax. We overnight in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
Day 4 – Hyannis – Plymouth Rock – Mayflower II – Plimoth Patuxet – Boston – This morning, we visit the John F. Kennedy Memorial, which overlooks the beautiful harbor of Hyannis. A short drive will bring us to the town of Plymouth, to view Plymouth Rock, the famous rock on which the Pilgrims stepped out onto the “New World.” Next, we visit Mayflower II, a full-scale replica of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America. The ship was recently renovated for the 400th anniversary of the voyage. After lunch on our own, we explore our country’s beginnings as we visit Plimoth Patuxet, a living history museum that recreates the original 1627 Plymouth Colony. Later today, we travel to the Boston area, where we will spend the next two nights.
Day 5 – City Tour of Boston, Lexington, and Concord – Faneuil Hall & Quincy Market – Old North Church – After an included breakfast, we begin touring with a local guide in Boston. We will see the downtown area, the Boston Common, the oldest public park in the country, and the many historical sights of the city. On our way to visit the site of the first conflict of the Revolutionary War, in Lexington, Massachusetts, we will pass Harvard University in Cambridge. Continuing to Concord, we will see the homes of literary greats Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Louisa Mae Alcott. In Concord, at the Old North Bridge, the Minuteman Statue stands on the site where the “shot heard around the world” was fired. Our tour concludes back in Boston at famous Faneuil Hall Marketplace, opened in 1742, and Quincy Market, its neighbor since 1825. This place was the scene of many stirring gatherings during the Revolutionary movement. Here visitors and locals alike shop, mingle, and enjoy a tremendous variety of food. After lunch on our own, we will visit the Old North Church, which has the windows from which Paul Revere’s signal lanterns flashed. Overnight same hotel.
Day 6 – Acadia National Park – Bar Harbor, Maine – After an included breakfast, we travel to the lovely seaside village of Bar Harbor, Maine. The beauty of the sea, mountains, lake, and forest has made this area world-famous as a summer resort. Here we visit Acadia National Park, which has the most breathtaking combination of ocean and mountain scenery north of Rio de Janeiro. Hotel accommodations for the next two nights will be in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Day 7 – Leisure Day in Bar Harbor – After an included breakfast, today will be at your leisure to do whatever most appeals to you in Bar Harbor. Overnight same hotel.
Day 8 – New Hampshire’s White Mountains – After an included breakfast, today we continue into New Hampshire, through White Mountain National Forest, known for its spectacular fall foliage. Experience a visual masterpiece as you witness the white birch trees putting on a display of dazzling golden hues intermingled with the green New England spruce. Dinner is included at our hotel in Lincoln, New Hampshire.
Day 9 – Hildene Mansion – Albany, New York – After an included breakfast, we depart our hotel and cross into Vermont. In Manchester, we take a tour of Hildene Mansion, the beautiful home of Robert Todd Lincoln. Our overnight accommodations will be in Albany, New York.
Day 10 – Hagerstown, Maryland – After an included breakfast, we drive through Pennsylvania, skirting along the edges of the Pocono Mountains on our way to Hagerstown to overnight.
Day 11 – Home – After an included breakfast, we board our coach to return home today. While our time in New England has come to an end, we bring with us wonderful fall foliage memories and newfound pride in our forefathers that we can share with friends and family.
